Do You Have Sticky Faith?

Do you remember why you came to the realization that you needed Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior?  My answer is simple…I made a mess of things in my life, and I knew from being in church my whole life that Jesus worked for others, so why not let Him have a shot.  I am sure that most of you can easily recall why you needed, and probably still need Jesus.  There is another question I have.  Why did you walk away from Him?

I ask this question because the answer may not be as simple as the first question.  I know that not everyone has walked away from Jesus, but the majority have at some point and time in their lives.  The question of why needs to be examined because we, as the Church have an issue that needs to be addressed.  Why are teens walking away from Jesus?

I have done research on this topic as a youth pastor because I feel God has led me to help stop students from walking away.  Research says that roughly 70-75 percent of students 18-22 walk away from the faith they grew up with.  We can help by making a sticky faith…a faith that sticks, like oatmeal on a cold winter morning.  Here are the ingredients for sticky faith:

  • Focus on relationship, not rules
  • Increase the faith community around them
  • Someone must walk with the student on their faith journey
  • Be open to conversations about faith, even the tough or yucky ones

This is not a perfect plan, but I do think it is a great start.  If you want more information on this topic, check out the book “Almost Christian,” Kenda Creasy Dean.  It is not an easy read, but it does shed some light on the topic.
